As a consumer, I always like to find out more about small businesses. Who runs them? Why did they set them up in the first place? What makes them special? I guess it is the journalist in me (that’s my day job!). So I thought it was important to explain why I set up Her Hair My Head. You can read my full hair loss story on the About Me page, but this business all started with my Instagram account @her_hair_my_head.

I have been suffering from gradual hair loss for a good 10-15 years, but it has got much worse in the past 5 years after the births of my two daughters. I started wearing toppers in 2018 and discovered the world of alternative hair on Instagram. I lurked for quite a while and only followed a few hair loss ladies. As my confidence grew, I started following more people and finding out about the many brands out there, so I chose to set up my own account just for hair loss. Telling the world I had hair loss was a huge weight off my shoulders. I was so inspired by all of the other fabulous women out there, that it gave me the confidence to share my story and hopefully help other women. I also started reviewing toppers and wigs. I love doing this, as I find honest reviews really helpful when deciding on which hair pieces to purchase. I have also made lots of expensive mistakes along the way. Four years down the line of wearing hair full time and I now know what I like and what I don’t like.

There are some brilliant alternative hair brands out there – especially in the USA and Australia – as well as quite a few smaller independents in the UK. I decided to launch Her Hair My Head essentially for selfish reasons, as I wanted to get the perfect human hair topper for myself! Having tried so many different base and cap constructions, as well as different partings, fronts and hair types, I now know that I prefer human hair silk tops for how realistic they look – and from my market research, I think there are lots of you out there who agree with me. That being said, I am also going to offer custom orders for those ladies who love a lace front or mono top.

I have put in a lot of time and research to find the right supplier and test out hair samples to see how they wear, style and wash. I am also working with Francesca from Peluka Salon to create some signature hair colours, which has been a journey in itself. Different hair types react to hair dye in different ways, so we have been working together to create beautiful colours that not only look fabulous but don’t damage the hair. I will soon be launching my stock colours, but you will have to wait a little bit longer for the signature pieces as we want to get them right!

My main aim for this business is to help women find their confidence, take control of their hair loss and feel amazing. Wearing toppers has changed my life for the better and I hope that I can do the same for others!
