Advice on choosing a wig/topper hairdresser

Advice on choosing a wig/topper hairdresser

When you buy a wig or topper, it won't necessarily feel like your hair when you first put it on. Further customisation, such as changing the parting or having the piece cut/coloured, can make it feel much more natural and more like it is your own hair.

Cutting and colouring wigs and toppers is a specialist skill. Some customers have a long-term hairdresser that they trust who is willing to modify their piece for them. However, we advise against cutting or colouring a piece yourself or taking your piece to a hairdresser who has not been trained or does not have experience in providing these services. If they cut the piece too short or get it wrong, it won't grow back! Plus, colouring human hair that has already been processed is different from colouring the hair that grows out of your head. We recommend using a hairdresser who has completed training in these skills. Below are some top tips on what to think about before getting your piece cut/coloured/styled.

Key advice

Cutting

Ideally, the hairdresser should cut the wig or topper while it is on your head. This is particularly important for toppers, as they need to blend in with your own hair. With toppers, make sure you have practised clipping the topper onto your head in the correct position that you plan to wear it in, as once it is cut, you will then need to wear it in that same position. This is also important if you are having a fringe cut into the piece.

Colouring

While we have colour tested the Her Hair My Head human hair wigs and toppers that we sell, we also sell many other brands. You can view our colouring advice for Her Hair My Head pieces here

Processed human hair behaves differently from virgin hair growing out of your head and that often means that tints will lift differently or the hair cannot take a strong bleach. If you are having a piece coloured, the stylist should do a strand test on the hair before applying an overall colour to see how the hair responds to the dye.

We always advise against using bleach on a human hair wig or topper, as it can reduce the quality and lifespan of the hair. It is much better to buy a lighter piece and have it toned darker than it is to buy a darker piece and try to lighten it with bleach.

Choosing a stylist

Find out about the stylist’s experience. Have they trained in cutting/colouring toppers and wigs? Do they have a wealth of experience in offering this service? Have they worked on the brand you are bringing to them before (important for colouring, see note above).

See our Trusted Partners page to view a selection of hairdressers that we have either used ourselves or have been recommended by our customers. Her Hair My Head Ltd has no affiliation with these companies and we cannot guarantee that the service provided will be appropriate for each individual customer. It is important to do your own research before choosing a hairdresser to modify (cut, colour or style) your wig or topper.

Once any products purchased from Her Hair My Head Ltd have left our premises and have been modified by another company, we cannot accept them back for a return, exchange or credit note. See our Terms & Conditions for more information.

What happens when things go wrong?

We have had customers who have taken their piece to a hairdresser and it has either been cut or coloured incorrectly, causing huge stress for both the customer and the hairdresser.

Before your appointment, make sure you ask the salon if they have a procedure in place for what happens if things go wrong. Will they refund you the price of the cut/colour? Will they rectify the mistake for free? Will they replace the piece if it is unwearable or damaged? If you are spending hundreds of pounds on a human hair wig or topper, you want to be sure that you are covered if something does go wrong.
