How to measure your head for a wig: a step-by-step guide

Choosing the perfect wig is about more than just colour and style – the right fit is essential for comfort, security and a natural look. Whether you're shopping for your first wig or are a seasoned alternative hair wearer, measuring your head correctly will help ensure you choose the right size and avoid any unwanted surprises when your wig arrives.

Follow our simple step-by-step guide below to measure your head accurately for a wig. All you’ll need is a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and perhaps a helping hand if you’d prefer someone else to take the measurements.

What you’ll need:

  • A soft, flexible tape measure (like a dressmaker’s tape)

  • A mirror

  • A pen and paper (or your phone) to record your measurements

  • A friend (optional, but helpful!)

Step 1: Prepare Your Hair

If you have biological hair, smooth it down as flat to your head as possible – using a wig cap can help. This ensures more accurate measurements and mimics how your hair will sit underneath a wig. If you’re bald or have minimal hair, you can measure directly.

Step 2: Measure Your Circumference

  1. Place the tape measure at your front hairline (or where your hairline used to be).

  2. Run the tape around behind your ear, down to the nape of your neck.

  3. Continue up behind your other ear and meet back at the front hairline.

  4. Make sure the tape is snug but not tight.

✍️ Write it down – this is your head circumference.

Step 3: Measure from Front to Back (Front to Nape)

  1. Place one end of the tape measure at the centre of your front hairline.

  2. Run it over the top of your head, all the way down to the nape of your neck (where your head meets your neck).

✍️ Write it down – this is your front-to-nape measurement.

Step 4: Measure from Ear to Ear (Over the Top)

  1. Position the tape measure at the top edge of one ear.

  2. Run it over the crown of your head to the same position on the opposite ear.

✍️ Write it down – this is your ear-to-ear over the top measurement.

What wig size do you need?

Once you’ve taken your measurements, you can compare them with the sizing guide of the wig brand you’re interested in. Most wigs come in the following standard sizes:

Wig Size Circumference (cm) Circumference (inches)
Petite 51 – 53 cm 20 – 21 inches
Average 54 – 56.5 cm 21.25 – 22.25 inches
Large 57 – 60 cm 22.5 – 23.5 inches

Bear in mind that every brand may vary slightly, and many wigs come with adjustable straps for a more customised fit.

The Her Hair My Head range of Luxury wigs comes in the following sizes:

Tips for the best fit:

  • If your measurements fall between sizes, opt for the larger size and adjust it to fit.

  • Try different cap constructions (e.g. lace front, monofilament, hand-tied) – they can affect how the wig feels and fits.

  • For the most accurate result, take the measurements more than once or ask a friend to help.
